Inuyasha Chapter 485

Inuyasha v49 ch485 "Yakurou Dokusen"

I’m just going release the omake pages at a later date. No point in delaying the whole chapter. As soon as Azula or myself receive a translation, one of us will scanlate and release those. Also, time for a little housekeeping.

I hear your complaints about the noticeable drop in overall quality over the past few weeks and I am acting to rectify the entire situation. It's a rough time of the year for us all so please keep the faith. Trust me, it concerns me as much as it concerns you.

Second Edit:  After seeing the translation for the omake, this may take a while to fit into the scans… I may not even do them. But we'll see.

  1. Next week's Shounen Sunday is a double issue, this means it'll be a normal length chapter but there will be no chapter the week afterward. Chapter 486 is next week and chapter 487 is going to be out on or around December 27th.
  2. Updating the archive is taking longer than I anticipated, I've just been swamped by school work and upcoming finals.
  3. I know, I know, the gallery view still sucks. I'm working on a permanent solution that will supplement the Photobucket. This may involve me splurging on paid hosting to support the files and bandwidth or learning some quick PHP. Either solution may not be implemented until January, but I will try my best over the next few weeks.

Third Edit:  If you want to see the script for that Patches made for the extra pages, click on "read on" button.

Title: "Manga College Special Lecture

Spirit of the Pros

Part 12

Today's Lecturuer: Takahashi Rumiko-sensei

Secrets of Creating Character and Story"

Piyoko: "Ohhhh… somehow, all my characters end up turning out the

same, piyo."

bg: "I'm the main character!"

bg: "I'm the rival!"

bg: "I'm the love interest!"

Takahashi: "Are you assigning precise and separate roles to your

characters?"

Piyoko: "It's Takahashi Rumiko-sensei from 'Inuyasha'!"

Takahashi: "You know how they say 'Comedians on TV wear their

characters'? Manga characters are fundamentally the same."

Takahashi: "The fool and the straight man is an example of role-

sharing, where a good character must be able to utilize his

resources."

bg: "I'm under the weather."

bg: "Then get under a roof!"

Piyoko: "Role-sharing, piyo?"

Takahashi: "For instance, putting playful characters with stoic

characters. Doing this, not only does it bring out their charm from

their interactions and cooperation, but they help move the story

along well, too."

Jaken: "Sesshoumaru-sama!"

Piyoko: "I see, piyo!"

—-

2.

Takahashi: "In the end, it's the characters who decide what kind of

story you're going to be writing."

Piyoko: "Wh… what do you mean by that, piyo?"

Takahashi: "When I'm writing, first I think about the details and

the plot, then think about what kind of characters would make this

story interesting."

bubble: "Story"

Takahashi: "Then I concentrate on 'What would this character say in

this situation?' or 'How would he act?'

Inuyasha: "Dammit, it's not morning yet?!"

Inuyasha: "If it weren't for this human body, this pathetic youkai

would…"

Takahashi: "Basically, an author doesn't say 'I want it to go this

way', the characters develop the story."

Takahashi: "Waait!!"

Inuyasha: "No way!"

Piyoko: "I… I see, piyo…"

Takahashi: "Even though I'm serialized weekly, I'm constantly

changing my mind on new characters' names until they show up. Even

if I'm not drawing them, a character who isn't changing is no fun."

Piyoko: "All right, I'm gonna write a story where the characters

lead!"

Takahashi: 'There's shouki coming out of his head…'

Takahashi: "Of course, after you create the characters, it's

important not to unnerve the readers too much."

Wonderful, this reminds me of the time where Inuyasha had to go to that old sage in order to master the dragon-scale Tetseiga…

Oh come on, when are we going to see Sessho again! Inu-gang are boring me!

But at least Miroku gets a taste of his own medicine.

If it's too difficult to overlay the text on the extra pages can you at least give us a script-like version? I'm dying to know what it says! Especially since it looks like Sesshoumaru and co. have a panel :-)

This release contains some of the most insane hyphenations. I'm giving just the strangest one:
————–
yo-
ur
—————
th-
at
—————
c-
ould
—————
myoug-
a-jii-
chan
—————
im-
plies, he |
—————
ov-
er
—————
wat-
erfa-
ll
—————
enoug-
h
—————
The last one is my favorite.. i mean the "-" is probably only 2-3 pixels shorter than "h" character. At best.

There are many (other) places where hyphen could have been avoided.
Please make the extra effort.

P.S.
Looking in the previous releases I notice that this style starts at ch482. I'm sorry I haven't noticed and reported this before, but the true is that for the last few releases I have been reading MakiMaki scanlations as they get out hours earlier.

Where are Seshomaru??? Does Rumiko remember him? He disapered from the manga. If the manga will finish about chapter 500, I think that he just will be on the "final combat" with Naraku.
Help please! If someone has the scanlations from the volume 46, please, send me it!!! It's the last volume to me.
If someone can help me leave a coment here. I will be so gratefull.

The guy just had a whole arc all to himself.

Sango hasn't had an arc like this in ages. Screw Sesshoumaru. >.>

No! Don't say that about Sesshoumaru! =O

And at Snow: Sorry, but it's really hard to make the text big enough to read and fit all the things into the speech bubbles. If you want, I can start making the text smaller. Heh heh.

@Azula,
I could start to give you examples how to do it right, but it would be waste of bits. Just take a look of the very same [MakiMaki] scanlation and see how they have done it. They even use bigger font.

When you are done, take a look of the older Freelance scanlations and try to use same font, style, line spaceing etc…
Ask the previous editor if you have to.

>>837 Snow, I sent Koopa an e-mail the other day to do just that. I have also considered taking over as editor once finals finish. Azula has brought other obligation to my attention that indicate that she may need to step down soon anyway.

All I need now is magical pixie juice. *must stop angsting 24/7*

@Snow: Also, the reason MakiMaki's releases are much earlier is because I happen to have the terror known as "school", in which children 6 to 18 receive education in order to prepare them for college and have nice life. ^___^

Azura, I if I remember right you were the one asking for reports of errors/mistakes so you can learn from them. I never intended this as personal attack. I also had no idea that they keep you in school all day long.)

As Stark was so kind to ask for examples, I’d make the effort to give them with some advices. I first must warn that I am not native English speaker and I have never been teched how to hyphenate.
I was just told “Don’t do it”. I’d share this advice with you.

If the word can fit it buble, don’t hyphenate it. Example (page4, Miroku)”I’m so-|rry ,|Sango”. – You see, if you had moved “sorry” on the line where “rry ,” is, it would have fitted. Actually this is exactly what MM have done.
Same thing applies for the “pr-otect” in the other buble. MM have done this too and they ended up with 6 lines instead of 5. As they have much smaller line space, the whole text fitted.

In next box the situation with “yo-re” is the same, if it have been keep whole, the last line would not have contained single word.

Hyphenating small words like “yo-re” “th-at” “ov-er” is really desperate measure. I’m not even sure this is remotely grammatically correct.
Same applies for hyphenation of single letter like “c-ould” and “enoug-h” “myoug-a”

In my native language the hyphenation is done at syllable. I guess this is general rule with many local exceptions. However breaking word in syllables could be avoided in combined words like “water-fall”. (according to http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/waterfall the word is broken into “wa-ter-fall”
If you want to know more about hyphenation I’d recommend you asking your English teacher.

About half of the hyphenations in old Freelance scanlations are done at suffix “-ing”. The other half are usually in “Inu-ya-sha” name. The syllables in names are provided directly from Japanese.

Well, don’t forget that you are using graphic program, not fixed-font-size terminal. You can do a lot of tricks to get few extra pixels.

As final note.
I actually thought that the extra time have been used in attempt to make the scanlation right and as you get more experience the time would drop to normal.
Silly me ):

I've been taking a stab at editing myself and it's much easier than I thought it'd be. Granted I have to set aside 2 hours to do it, it's kind of fun…

I've found a key strategy that has help me along.

The normal font size for a Freelance scanlation should be 2.88 pt font. For extremely small or cramped bubbles, I will use 2.5 pt font. I also Bbeak lines where they are least likely to have a significant effect on the sentence structure.
