The Internet = Serious business in a series of tubes (UPDATED!)
Confused about the events of the last 48 hours? Here's how things went down if you missed the drama (and the subsequent "lulz") or are curious about what went on behind closed doors.
UPDATE: It is becoming increasingly apparent that a single irate commenter was the mastermind behind the spam attack and the subsequent empty threats. The IP address of the commenter and the attacker were the same. The asshole has been IP banned and reported to his ISP.
Basically, on Sunday night, one of my many enemies on the net decided to bring his/her vendetta against me to a whole new level. This person supposedly enlisted the services of a renowned spam and site-wrecking squad in order to trash my site over the course of 48 hours. I had managed to contact the mercenary through e-mail (this person claims that they were using a hacked e-mail account to communicate with me) and in true diplomatic style, I was able to convince both the attacker and the mastermind to go soft on me and my site in exchange for a public apology and voluntarily taking my site down for a day (yesterday).
Folks, I didn't want to take any chances with these people. Whether or not they were bluffing is irrelevant. I did what I needed to do in order to protect my site and the community. While I did take all the necessary precautions to backup my SQL tables and data, I didn't feel that I would need to fight back, and in the end, I didn't have to. Things managed to resolve themselves and that's really all that matters.
For what its worth, the nightmare is over. In response to everything that has happened, all users must register before they are allowed to comment. This will help crack down on spam, attacks, and prevent impersonation. This measure will remain in place until I see fit.
First Edit: I also took the liberty of upgrading the commenting system during the downtime. There are probably gonna be a few bugs to work out and if I can't fix 'em, we'll go back to the original format.
I'm surprised to see serious cat shows up now at the top of the thread. Yay for serious cat!
I have my "Kagome-like" qualities, but I'd have to compare myself to Helga from Hey Arnold. Sweet on the inside, hellspawn on the outside.
