The Internet = Serious business in a series of tubes (UPDATED!)

Filed under: Random — Starks at 8:29 am on Tuesday, May 8, 2007

Confused about the events of the last 48 hours? Here's how things went down if you missed the drama (and the subsequent "lulz") or are curious about what went on behind closed doors.

UPDATE: It is becoming increasingly apparent that a single irate commenter was the mastermind behind the spam attack and the subsequent empty threats. The IP address of the commenter and the attacker were the same. The asshole has been IP banned and reported to his ISP.

Basically, on Sunday night, one of my many enemies on the net decided to bring his/her vendetta against me to a whole new level. This person supposedly enlisted the services of a renowned spam and site-wrecking squad in order to trash my site over the course of 48 hours. I had managed to contact the mercenary through e-mail (this person claims that they were using a hacked e-mail account to communicate with me) and in true diplomatic style, I was able to convince both the attacker and the mastermind to go soft on me and my site in exchange for a public apology and voluntarily taking my site down for a day (yesterday).

Folks, I didn't want to take any chances with these people. Whether or not they were bluffing is irrelevant. I did what I needed to do in order to protect my site and the community. While I did take all the necessary precautions to backup my SQL tables and data, I didn't feel that I would need to fight back, and in the end, I didn't have to. Things managed to resolve themselves and that's really all that matters.

For what its worth, the nightmare is over. In response to everything that has happened, all users must register before they are allowed to comment. This will help crack down on spam, attacks, and prevent impersonation. This measure will remain in place until I see fit.

First Edit: I also took the liberty of upgrading the commenting system during the downtime. There are probably gonna be a few bugs to work out and if I can't fix 'em, we'll go back to the original format.

I don't see anything wrong with having a register/login system; there are too many positives. I'm not sure why these people targeted you, but I still say that no amount of "SRS INTERWEBZ BIZNEZZ" should result in an attack of hentai spam. I stick by my earlier statement that they should die in a fire. Anyway, as Vonnegut put it: so it goes. Are images still turned on? I just wanted to start things off with a laugh for everyone to clear the air. (Please don't murder me, Starks!)

Aw, well.  Anyway, the image was one of those <a href="http://cache.bordom.net/images/cb38cb5004473ea6ba5e8f8c2f602940.jpg">"I are serious cat.  This is serious thread."</a> cat macros.  And wow, I still can't get paragraphs right on this new system.

I spent most of yesterday catering to the demands of my enemy and upgrading the software on this site.

Nothing too exciting. :)

o.O << never knew this could happen to someone who she knows ofI don't know what happened, but I can't help but wonder this was too much, seriously (I mean Starks' enemies' actions). Anyway, I'm glad it seems it is solved now and everything is back in order and peace :) And I'm grateful this site goes on^^

Perhaps it was bad timing, at least it is over. Hopefully this will not happen again. Glad to see the site back up though. I would certainly have missed the scans and the spoilers we get from freelance if the it had been wreaked. Let alone the conversations on the board, it  makes the site fun (usually).  Now we should be getting a new spoiler by the end of this week and the conversations can once again return to how RT is either a genius or ruining her Inuyasha ;)

Well, I don't know about that, Sorrel.  Apparently, whomever it is has come back to try to stir up shit with me, but I said my piece, and that's that.  Heh, and of course, I guess they lied to me in their post in order to scare me or something, and Starks caught them and called them on it.  Eh, I've seen this stunt many times over the course of many years spent being an admin to different fandoms, so this is nothing new to me, and it's definitely nothing new to the Inuyasha fandom.  I've seen worse on the Yahoo groups and on Livejournal. In any case, the new commenting system seems to be doing good so far, Starks.  Haven't had any blank page loads/errors yet.

Comment on update:  How old is this twit?  Damn, I've dealt with an 11-year-old who had enough sense and balls to admit that he was the spammer, instead of blaming it on some "internet site-wrecking company".  If those things exist, then sites like Fark, Livejournal, Fandom Wank, etc. would cease to be considering the amount of people they piss off every day.

KK, even still, such site-wreckers do exist… Just stroll through YTMND's forums, 4chan's /b/, Digg, or Slashdot…

Scrap, you didn't play me for a chump. I only assumed the worst and didn't want to call you on your bluff. How did you expect me to react? In a selfish manner and look like the asshole? I acted in the best interests of my site. I did everything I needed to do to protect my community.

You can atone for your childish actions and rejoin our community as a valuable commenter. Be warned: If you ever pull crap like this again, I'll have zero reservations about banning your IP range or contacting Comcast.

I do stroll through those sites, have for years at places like Slashdot…so I'm still amazed that these things are still real and not just some poor kid with nothing better to do.  Eh well.  Stupid me.  Internet is pretty serious business. No offense, "Scrap," but there are better trolls at Fark, Digg, 4chan — even Craigslist.  And that "partial blame" I took was an apology to Starks because I don't want to piss him off; I think he's a pretty cool guy.  I don't give two shits about you.

KK, I fixed the "paragraph problem" literally a minute ago. Go back to your original settings.

To start a new paragraph with a proper line break, just press "enter" once on your keyboard.

The problem was that unregistered commenters and level 1 users (registered users) couldn't use unfiltered HTML. That problem is fixed now.

I actually did come by the site last night and saw that it was 'down for maintenance'.

I can't believe that some people are still doing stuff like that.I mean, if you're bored,

there's plenty of games to play, manga to read, quizzes to take, etc etc, on the internet.

Why waste your time hacking some site? How is that any fun? Some people are losers.

Anyways, I know you said that the next chapter wouldn't be out till the 9th but I'm

impatient.Which is why I'm here.Again.Today.Waiting…waiting….

I have to admit that this has been the driving force behind my ability to stay awake since it started (that and I've nearly pissed myself laughing several times), so thanks for that.  Otherwise, I'd have been bored and fallen asleep many times over.

I also have to admit that I'm pretty damn surprised this hasn't spilled onto Fandom Wank yet.  They love this stuff.

I had some reservations about you, starks, extending a forgiveness policy to catfish. In the end I am glad you ended up banning the twerp. His/her posts were intentionally inflamatory, taking the low road whenever possible. I just figured…. if this person does end up staying on I am not going to acknowledge any posts made by them. Then the nasty comments made after it all started, like they had you over a barrel, really pissed me off. Granted you did do what you had to in order to protect your site, and hard work but it was almost like having to meet the demands of a terrorist. Disgusting to say the least.

But in the end, Yea….the site is up and looks good.

P.S. KagomeK, you're kind of fiesty aren't you ?  LOL.

I banned him because he mocked my offer of forgiveness.

The only reason why I bended to his demands is because the Internet is the perfect "fog of war". You can never judge the size of the enemy's resources.

Wow, there are some lame-ass people out here in 'net-land.

I hadn't heard of this 'til today, and I'm still a little fuzzy on the specifics, but for what it's worth, Starks – and I know it ain't worth much – I commend you for the way you've handled this situation. A lot of people would've spazzed out and started some childish game of one-upmanship, putting their site and its community at risk. Kudos for being a mature, rational person in a room full of kindergarten rejects.

Starks-
Wow, I didn't check your awesome site for a week and it seems that all Hell had broken loose around here. How awful!
Like M_B said above, I'm fuzzy on the specifics as well, but I just can't imagine someone putting such time and effort into damaging someone else's hard work. But there is no shortage of strangeness in the world, and people are capable of far worse than this. I also agree with M_B about how you handled the situation- it must have been difficult to keep your cool.
I'm glad things turned out OK for you. Thank you for this site, and all your hard work!

Pliny

I doubt this will happen again – or if it will, it won't be any more serious than this. Even the so-called script kiddies consider spamming message boards childish – it is not "cool" enough for them. From what I have seen in the spammer's posts, he/she was a complete noob. I think the registration system will solve the issue completely.

But Starks, if, by any chance, a more serious group of spammers would attack your site, know that your current tactic won't help. The thing these people love about such attacks is the feeling of power – power over you. If you bend to their will, they will come back, sooner or later, because you played their game. I am saying it again, people who spam messageboards without using bots of some kind are complete beginners – banning their IPs and reporting them is the best decision, reasoning with them beyond a specific point won't really help.

It was quite the drama over the last couple of days, and KagomeKagome, you really did get fiesty! I loved the use of Asshat- do you listen to Don and Mike?
