Avatars and much ado about Ubuntu *UPDATED*

Filed under: Random — Starks at 6:20 pm on Tuesday, May 15, 2007

Listen to me explain new site features and praise the joys of Ubuntu Linux…

Okay, first off. You may have noticed some funky things going on with the site over the last 24 hours. It's just me, testing some new things. I've set up a rather inefficient avatar system using a HEAVILY MODIFIED Gravatar plugin. Gravatars are "globally recognized avatars" but this system it runs on is absolute shit. So, rather than use the service, I'm making use of a Wordpress plugin for you to allow you to use URLs of off-site images as avatars on my site and run them locally. Please keep avatars under 100×100 (preferably 80×80).

If you want an avatar, click here! DO NOT USE THE GRAVATAR WEBSITE! THE SERVICE SUCKS, USE THE PLUGIN PAGE!

Now, about Ubuntu Linux, I simply love it and I have started to make the switch. I'm sick and tired of Windows XP and Office 2003 crashing on me. Windows Vista is absolute crap and slow as whale-shit on my new laptop. I can't believe I even wasted my time downloading it. Microsoft hasn't gotten any of my money since Windows 3.1. Also, Office 2007 simply blows. Both are pretty, but not much else. Windows XP works but it's 6 years old and showing its age. Now, I need a next generation operating system and office utility. I need look no further than Ubuntu 7.04 "Feisty Fawn" and OpenOffice. Ubuntu is simply amazing! I've used Linux before but it's never been so damn easy. You do have to move around the command line a bit, but everything is pretty much set up. You've got Firefox, OpenOffice, MPlayer, and other stuff preinstalled with all the necessary drivers. I love free and open software and I love tinkering with my operating system and learning how it works.

While I may only use Ubuntu only about 25% of the time, but I am absolutely sick of Windows. I hate having my PC crash on me and becoming sluggish on a brand new machine. I am in awe as to how I used to deal with 70MB sized printer drivers that take 15 minutes to install. With Ubuntu, everything just works. I can run Windows applications and games using Wine and Cedega. No evil enterprise invading my computer with DRM and spyware. By the way, Ubuntu is absolutely beautiful and efficient when you install the Beryl manager…

Check out Ubuntu at their website: http://www.ubuntu.com

One final note, the spoiler preview was never posted on 2ch.net, we're gonna be surprised about a chapter for the first time in months.

Thanks Starks. One of these days I am going to have to download Linux, Windows is such garbage. I've been meaning to learn shell for a while now and keep putting it off. I had never heard of Ubuntu before though.

Yah, Windows is trash. Dual-booting XP and Ubuntu is becoming a daily habit.

Yeyz for avatars! XD Mine's L from Death Note – tell me to change it if the animation's annoying. ^^;

Personally, I always preferred Windows over Linux. Windows XP = love forever. I wanted Vista, but I don't really care, since XP has always been my favorite (not that I've ever used Vista, but eh…)

Ah well. It's all personal preference. :P

Yay – another linux user. Ubuntu is great, I used it for a year or so and never had any major problems. I would be using it now, but they dropped ppc support.

Pfft… Mac OS X = win. :D I looked at Ubuntu, and Mac OS X looks better (in function and look).

As for the chapter, perhaps no spoiler = very good surprise. :)

Also, I finally decided to sign up. Thanks for scanlating this great manga, Starks and staff! :D

I have not kept up with OS's like I used to.

I haven't tried any linux since RedHat, didn't much care for it so I didn't keep it. I run Windows 2000 Server. I hate most of the standard windows……."Home" just means it sucks more then "Office" editions. IMO. I have run XP server, it just has too many things to fix. It took long enough to fix all the bugs in 2000, I just don't feel like starting over again.  Ubuntu is not a version I have heard of before (geez I am really out of the loop). I Still have fond memories of Dos.

Vista is a train wreck for notebooks. I have zero plans to install it unless SP1 does some amazing shit and makes Vista not suck.

Ubuntu is modular. One-size-fits-all framework. You don't need to buy an "Ultimate" version. Everything comes together and it's all free!

*cough*Like Mac OS X.*cough*

I endlessly hear of problems with Windows… Vista requires soooo much upgrade to use. Leopard, for example, will need none. :)

Ah, but Mac OS X is only good if you have a Mac. And if you don't have a Mac, and you don't have the money for one, you have to learn to live without it. That doesn't change the fact that Mac is better then PC.

Yay! Avatars!^^

Ahem. Anyway, I'm using winXP, and sometimes it can really get on my nerves, though I remember using Linux (I don't remember which one, thoughˇˇ") a few years ago, but it was much too complicated to my taste to even listen to a CD with it :S

Is Ubuntu easier to work with…?

Starks, Welcome to the world of the liberty.

I've been using only Linux for 3 years and I am quite familiar with its internal workings. If you ever have problem don't hesitate to ask me.

I would really recommend Ubuntu for these who don't want to bother with Linux internal workings (unlike me). It is made with the idea to be easy for newcomers, to hide all the tech stuff and simply to work out of the box.

There is a lot of opensource (free) software that you can simply download and use. And you don't need virus scanners, spyware removers, firewalls and other bloats that casual windows users accept for "essential". There are problems and they are getting slowly fixed. Problem are mainly with vendors that doesn't provide help for  running their (latest) hardware (e.g. ATI, but they promise to fix their behavior really soon)

Snow, Ubuntu is easy as pie. Granted you do have to use terminal every once in a while, but that's really only if you are looking to tinker around with things. I really love the Debian packaging system and how it blurs the line between software applications and OS components.

You know somethin about the new chapter eh?  eh! gimme!  I hope that Inuyasha takes his new/improved god-sword and sticks it right into naraku's skull.  Of course…I wouldn't mind a chapter exclusively devoted to miroku…preferably one where he visits some brothels with inuyasha.  For being such a pimp I give miroku an A+…yah…basically philanders with young women on a daily basis…

Here's the premise:  (Miroku walks into a brothel with Inuyasha…both piss drunk…)

Inuyasha: Warf the hell are we?

Miroku:  (grunts)  We're home…

Inuyasha:  One a you lufly young ladies wanna help me…ughhh…polish my god-sword?  (chuckles like the drunken fool he is)  wait…..wait…where's the bathroom!?  it's gotten….reallllllll….bad…..

(As Inuyasha darts to the bathroom Miroku surveys the herd of prostitutes literally overflowing out of the brothel.  He leans his head back slightly and adresses the room at large.)

Miroku:  Let the games begin!

(Like….ten prostitutes just friggin tackle Miroku….it's a pile on…)

(Several hours later, piss drunk and penniless both men stumble out the saloon dours…both with little drunken smiles on their faces.)

Miroku:  It's a good life…

Inuyasha:  Hell yes!

Inuyasha for president baby!

Many of you may be wondering why I'm pushing Inuyasha so hard for office…luckily for us all there are some good reasons why we should elect him.

1:  He don't take shit! from b**ches!

2:  He is the son of god.

3:  He takes a lickin! and keeps on tickin baby!  It's what I'm talkin bout!

4:  His political stance is straightforward;  he cuts straight to the heart of most issues…especially when those issues are enormous mutant demons!

5:  He believes in tighter gun control;  one time this guy shot him with a gun and Inuyasha totally handed this guy his own ass on a silver platter.

6:  Inuyasha and his vice president, Senator Miroku, will make prostitution legal in every state and in every supermarket…they know full well that sometimes you just need a brothel AND some friut-rollups.

7:  Since he is only half human he can, at the worst, only be half as bad as the other guy.  That's twice as good in my book!

In conclusion…Inuyasha is the right choice for president and the obvious choice for you.  Jump on the band wagon today and remember!  when you cast your ballot vote Inuyasha!

Strange but I'm having some trouble uploading local image file for avatar. Starks could you try to change your avatar under Linux. I checked and the browser doesn't even try to open the file (latest Firefox). Attaching files in web mails have never been problem.

I don't want to use external URL if it could be avoided…

Feisty Fawn with the built-in XP dual boot is awesome.  The only reason I use XP is for the gaming that Ubuntu cannot do, alas.

Hm, my icon is 80×80, but it's still gigantic compared to everyone else's icons.

Oh, and Vista was a turd on arrival.  It still has bugs (a la graphic drivers and such) that haven't been worked out, and who knows if they ever will be (MS blames Nvidia, Nvidia blames MS, rinse, repeat).

I will be honesty, I hated using Knoppix and RedHat (non-Fedora). Ubuntu is essentially zero-hassle.

KK, like you said: Vista is nothing more than a polished turd.
