Inuyasha Final Act is indeed a pacing nightmare

Filed under: Random — Starks at 1:08 pm on Saturday, October 3, 2009

Sunrise, have you lost your mind? 12 chapters in a single episode?!?! Have you learned anything from animating Tales of the Abyss? You can't cram 20 volumes of content or 70 hours of playing into a 26 episode anime!

Next episode is "Kagura's Wind" and if Sunrise blows through a certain scene, there will be a shit-ton of angry fans (not me though <__<).

Edit: To watch the episode and preview at the end, go to the Shonen Sunday website.

Edit 2: Next week will cover a minimum of 8 chapters, including chapter 404 for some reason.

Edit 3: During the Inuyasha Final broadcast earlier today, an animated Kyoukai no Rinne commercial advertising Weekly Shounen Sunday was shown. Keep in mind that this doesn't mean a Rinne anime is coming anytime soon. There's very little to animate right now. Do note that a similar commercial was done for Inuyasha back in 1997. The anime didn't start until 2000.

This anime here is a problem.
Let me elaborate. Noone can really make the best of things like just enjoy the fact that we even get a sequel because I for example could have lived my life without the conclusion of this anime. I was very appreciative of simply enjoying the 30 min Black Tessaiga special.
Here however we are now getting a conclusion and ive seen too many mistakes in the entertainment industry as of 2009 (and Inuyasha being the favorite anime that is my fav ) i cannot bear to see more poor execution of what should be a great one.
Even the mass majority can agree that based on all the manga material AFTER the first anime produced, there is enough remaining manga to Produce UP TO 52 EPISODES IN Total.
To be honest at this point i feel that people should start emailing the animation studio about why wonderful original manga tales are being condensed and skipped when covering the anime version of the story.

first off,  i'd like to know where Inuyasha Anime Examiner saw the Black Tessaiga special. but beyond that, anyone who had been paying attention to the info saw this coming. we knew it was only going to be 26 episodes (as terrible as that is), so let's not spend the next 6 months complaining about it.  i guarantee the very end will be done well. how much they sacrifice in the meantime remains to be seen.

I have to admit this was somewhat hacked. Some characters had knowledge that w/o the manga seemed somewhat random. Sesshy & Kouga shouldn't have premiered this episode, they wasted time with that. They also took a present-era scene from a chapter way down the road to start, which surprised me.
The good news is that covering 12-15 chapters per episode for 26 episodes brings 300+ chapters – and we only have 202 to cover. If only one thing maybe, the final battle and its aftermath inside the jewel will get proper attention.

Let's be positive… at least they continued the anime… I've to admit… the episode appeared to be in velocity2. Very strange watching so many chapters in 24 minutes… But I think they did it well..The only thing they did was not to concentrate the action of an episode on one character…They made actions happening at the sime time…We were used to episodes with an action very separated, to make the episode take longer… When we read manga it appears that the action is so long :D . I liked. It was 100% story and they just skipped 1 part…
It's my opinion :D

wadetruckertonNo Gravatar

October 4, 2009 @ 4:33 am

it was definitely rapid, but i thought it was great. you can't watch it expecting to see everything just as it was in the manga… didn't everyone learn that lesson during the first run of the anime? just forget that you know the story and try to follow along like a newcomer and it'll be fun to watch.
i agree that the speed will slow down during the more important parts of the story. if they continued at the pace this episode set, the story would end within 15 episodes; there's 11 episodes worth of material more than that already animated, so we know it can't possibly move like this often. in a way, this is kind of what the fans wanted…  there's absolutely not going to be any filler. (including rumiko's own filler arcs…)

Feels strange that Kagura is going to die so suddenly, but oh well. I'm just thrilled we get new Inuyasha! I have to agree though that all the actions happening in one episode as opposed to focusing on one character was a little disheartening, but I think, like what the rest of you guys said, they'll slow things down. I just hope they won't leave out the chapter where Inuyasha and Kagome almost kiss, and Miroku and Sango's kiss too. But if the creators are smart, they know they'll tick off a lot of girl fans by excising the romance.

Thank you Diana for the link.
It wasn't bad I think; I did not read this  exact part of the manga, so I don't know precisely which events were skipped over, but it still felt like a coherent plot, if truly fast-paced.
I must ask though, is a fast pace a bad thing? People used to complain how slowly things moved in the original, so shouldn't a little condensing actually help things?

SailorKagomeNo Gravatar

October 4, 2009 @ 7:44 am

A fast pace is not a bad thing. However,we are dealing here with a way to0 fast pace.  LOL,if they keep it at the same pace, the whole story will be finished in less than 10 episodes. They should slow down a bit. And now,my first impressions on this episode :

Opening : Wow,Kagome in highschool uniform, she looks very mature. Except that, the opening was nice and flashy but the song bored me to tears.

Graphic: Slightly improved, more colorful than I last remember ,but generally the same.

Sound : Exactly the same.No improvements at all. And the voice actors are exactly the same. Most probably their voices changed a bit, after all,5 years have past.

Plot/Action : Very, very rushed.Too rushed for my taste. After watching the episode I was thinking something like "What the hell just happened ?! " . They MUST slow the pace.

Ending : Really cool ! I loved it ! Inuyasha and Kagome were cute with their fingers tied by the "red string of fate".

Overall rating: 7/10. It could have been so much better !!! But I guess we should be grateful that it gets continued after all this time.

I thought the episode was pretty awesome, Though I haven't read all the manga to know about all the missing chapters and pacing ( I think I'm on book 8 right now. Limited money, limited Manga ^_^; )
The new music was good and I absolutely loved the new ending!! (Guess it's the fangirl in me coming out lol)

Yamahato YokimokoNo Gravatar

I feel it was too rushed. One minute I was watching Kohaku run into Kagura and the next Kouga was kicking Moryoumaru's ass, which I was thinking "Okay, where the hell did he come from?". It was really choppy. I'm happy that we have the anime back, but I'm not so happy with the quality. It's like asking for a new car and getting one from like the 1950s from a junk yard.

akaAkiraHikariNo Gravatar

October 4, 2009 @ 11:34 am

While they did speed through quite a bit… I'm quite happy to see that Kikyou will be included quite a bit. She had a fairly good sized chunk of the episode, and in the ending sequence, there were pictures of hre and InuYasha. I appreciated that. I just hope they don't ruin her death scene. >_<

Also, Isn't this just insanely nostalgic? Miroku's still Miroku, Kagome's still mean and can't shoot worth crap, and Sesshomaru is still a BAMF. XD

NinjaSheikNo Gravatar

animeluver89No Gravatar

October 4, 2009 @ 12:06 pm

When I first watched the episode, my reaction was "…….WTF WAS THAT?? The opening and endings were really good though." I mean, they skipped one of my favorite chapters and everything, and the fact that it's only 26 episodes long doesn't help to ease the pain. But then I thought about it, and just to see everything in action and not just in the manga was really cool. I get to see my InuXKag fluff again ^_^ which is a big plus.
So my final judgement is, on a scale of 1 to 10 (worst to best) I rate it a 6. Not the best but hey, it's better than nothing, the music helps it a lot, and it shows that Inuyasha lives even over a year after its completion. Though one complaint I have on the Viz subbed version is that they don't have the opening/ending subbed. I really want to know the lyrics and its too fast for me to translate very easily.

Inuyasha Anime ExaminerNo Gravatar

October 4, 2009 @ 12:35 pm

Time for me to rate this anime so far. From 1 to 10!!

The anime opening and ending- The songs were well done with the themes exchanging concepts such as A Future Without You and With You at the respective beginning and end. I'm pretty sure not all the characters had to be shown in the intro and ending sequence.
The pretty colors animated and are designed pretty well. Kagomes noticably Bluer Hair can be described as "Sexy".
The episode itself is obviously rushed with all the never ending battle secnes. Though there are a few moments in which the characters relax and the drama and humor are handled both tracially and comedically, let alone both moments being short.
Also Since when can Naraku's servant Kanna READ MINDS though HER MIRROR????

Koga and Sesshomarus appearnces were unnecesary. The initial concept of skipping chapters expecially in Kohaku's moments are out of sense and logic when his "assignment" from Naraku doesnt develop any further than slaying unexplained enemies.

The interaction between Hakudoshi and his minion was never in the manga which provides an excellent build up and story moments.

Im going to have to rate this episode a 6.5 out of 10.

This is my own personal comment/question here, as an audience viewer!  Why are you guys so supportive of the fact we still get the idea of new Inuyasha anime when the quality of it matters just as much as anything? The quality of the anime is rushed terribly.

You guys are being OVERLY APPECIATIVE of the EXECUTION of this material. I have to say this now just because i saw the preview for next weeks Inuyasha Episode.

If Sunrise FUCKS UP the Episode Kaguras Wind then I expect ratings to plumit. Too many things happen in the next episodes preview.

Im not saying all this becuase i want to complain for the next six months.  Im saying this becuase Sunrise cutting down episodes of Inuyasha IS A LONG TERM REPRECUSSION as long as ONLY 26 EPISODES of Inuyasha are being produced!!!

The cuts are going to keep happening again and again. Watching this anime, has its fun moments, but it DOESNT redeem the agony of cuts.

Sure it's not going to be the best in the beginning… but how it is now isn't all that bad.

Well… Just saw it and as someone who has focused more on watching the anime rather than reading the manga, it wasn't bad. Because I primarily watch Inuyasha, I didn't feel the pacing was that bad, simply because maybe I didn't remember everything that was going on in the manga…

One thing that I will be very disappointed about: Kagura's death scene. Not too fond of her character, but it does involve someone that I love… I really, really hope they execute that satisfactorily. REALLY.

Contrary to most opinions, I like the opening song. The beginning starts off kinda boring, but I love the chorus. :)

Koga's appearence was rather random and unnecessary… And I forget when Kikyo dies, but I hope it happens soon :)

I feel like it's just us English-speaking viewers who have problems with the near-incoherent pacing of the anime. The Japanese seem happy just to know that the anime's back.
I'd rather have a long, filler-filled, comprehensively told anime then a rushed botched job actually. 26 episodes? ridiculous.

MooMoo-of-DoomNo Gravatar

October 5, 2009 @ 9:05 pm

Hmm…. preview ruins the whole next episode. And if you put it together with the trailer, you have the whole thing.

Spoiler of manga….sort of….I guess….don't bash me. This is what I think is going to happen in the episode:

Episode starts off with Inuyasha and them at Midoriko, Inuyasha catches Kikyo's scent, chases after soul collector. Kikyo explains about Midoriko and alike souls. Kohaku follows her, yada, yada. Suddenly switch to Koga who find Moryoumaru getting his dumb armor, tries to fight him. Midoriko's will affects him and he decides to get a weapon. He gets it, yada, yada, yada.
Mouryomaru runs into Sesshomaru, Sesshomaru fights with Tokijin, get caught in Moryoumaru's arm (shown in the trailer) Tenseiga pulses, he gets all shocked, probably realizing Kagura's going to die. He fights moryoumaru again, breaks Tokijin, and makes it in time to see Kagura die. Inuyasha and crew see Kagura die.

In theory though because I don't know what part Inuyasha would smell Kagura's blood. I could be completely wrong of course.

Yes the anime seems to be oh shall we say in the famous words of  Tpain "chopped and screwed". However, I am totally glad that they are finishing Inuyasha. I wanted an ending to the anime and I kicked and screamed until I got it and now it's here. Albeit that wasn't quite what I meant but I didn't want the anime to drag out until my children were born either so I had always assumed that if they brought the anime back  that it would in fact have parts and pieces cut out. I refuse to be upset over them skipping and combining chapters because I can't remember some of them anyway! For the ones that I did remember I pretended to be blissfully unaware that they had done anything to the anime. Of course while I was watching I had to make sure I kept my eyes pinned open because if I blinked I probably would have missed several chapters. As I watched it I continued to wonder if I needed to push the play button because I could have sworn that it was on fastforward. However, I look forward to Saturday and will continue to do so despite the fact that Sesshoumaru will have acquired Meidou Zangetsuha with the three quarter circle next weekend! I'm being sarcastic but if they don't slow down that's where they'll be.  Anyway I'm a life time Inuyasha fan and no matter how the anime plays itself out I will watch every weekend on the edge of my seat with popcorn in hand. The worst that it will do is make me look back at the manga and improve my CSI skills  :)

I'm really getting angry about all these complaints about the anime pacing too fast. You're damn right I'm over appreciative! I'm actually way, way, way, overly over appreciative! I've been a fan of Inuyasha since my freshman year and seeing the last episode of Inuyasha disheartened me. I felt so unsatisfied and as if I was hanging on by a thread. I almost gave up hope and then I hear Inuyasha is finally finishing, just what I've been wanting for so long and now, everyone's complaining.

Personally, I didn't see a damn thing wrong in the episode. I thought the pacing was just perfect. The anime before was drawing out things way, way too slow. It's nice for the anime to finally pick up its speed. Besides, the chapters the anime apparently skimmed over, aren't that crucial to the plot anyway. If the anime skipped your favorite chapters, oh well, some of mine have been skipped too and I'm hoping one of my absolute favorite arcs won't be skipped either, but if it happens then it happens. Just go back and read the chapter, that's what I suggest.

Sorry if I'm coming off rude, but I worry that all this complaining will make the creators feel discouraged and then they won't continue. I speak the truth when I say Inuyasha the Final Act is not at all such a horrible anime as you guys are making it out to be.

They had a good 5 years to decide on when the anime should be restarted and a whole year to try condensing the story properly. It wasn't too bad a job I'll say, but I don't really understand why they only planned 26 episodes, or they were probably only given 26 episodes (slots) and had to work with it. If the latter's true, then I'm absolutely fine b/c they are pretty much restrained, otherwise, I'll say it just really isn't any good foresight or planning on their part.

And it's gonna be hard for some to accept the rapid pace b/c the original anime was almost an exact reproduction of the manga (page by page; the fillers not included).  They might have shifted certain arcs back or changed the sequence a little (like the peach man arc) but it's was in it's entirety an exact replica, so we really have to continue watching before any solid conclusion might be made. Perhaps they might revisit chapters they've skipped? I won't say there's no possibility (:

Maybe a new movie will come out one day?

Given the content of episode 2, I'm pretty much convinced at this point that Tokijin will break before Kagura dies.

@CLOVER

I stand by my statements. I will not repeat them because typing is hell. And as for you I can say that THE ANGER TOWARDS SUNRISE ANIMATION IS JUSTIFIED and I RECOMMEND AS MANY PEOPLE ON THIS SITE THE CONACT THE STUDIO BY PHONE OR EMAIL ABOUT THESE RUSHED EDITS.

The chapters that were ARE VERY VERY CRUCIAL TO THE PLOT. They are a further insight on the elements that make themselves known to the overall presentation.

You may not see it CLOVER but we all do. The only thing that came out  is how broken hearted we are to see that a great story that left us on a damn cliff hanger that in anime form NOT MANGA doesnt have very long to reach its anime end.

People like you dont even seem to understand that people should NOT have perspectives on HOW the story is told, just as long as they HAVE A STORY.

What I am trying to say is that for some reason there appears to be a divide between Anime AND Manga fans. I am of a different THIRD party, I am someone who enjoys what Inuyasha throws at me when i am seeing new storytelling for the FIRST TIME.

Watching the anime feels like a predicatble adaptation, however there are filler elelments of the anime that could HAVE BECOME a part of the core story SUCH AS Ayame, or how Goryomaru's death and apparent revival could've been elaborated WHICH WAS NOT, how Naraku will get new spider powers as it he will be shown with it DEEPER into the story, how the 30 MINUTE OVA of Black Tessaiga will be animated (Good god that anime came last year, and im strongly hoping Sunrise doesnt condense it into 20 minutes)

Basically theres IMPORTANT elements to question in the future of the execution of this show. Its good that the anime is back but the RESULT is NOT WORTH THE COST if the job is batched, rushed, and SEVERLY LIMITED one,  but basically the persepctive is 50/50

At the pace this anime will continue, this show is what will DESTROY THE FANBASE, well worse than those stupid Kagome/Kikyo arguments fangirls and boys are always bringing up.

For me as a critic and a person I was pissed when the anime ended but I calmed down and learned of the MOST LOGICAL REASON. All that material you watched came from the damn MANGA.  I didnt whine about the anime since it ended. The most logical and healtier thing to do was to get into the manga and finish reading the storyline for people dwelling on the matter of being left at an anime cliffhanger.

Anime or Manga: The story WAS basically the same until Episode 167 and Chapter 356. Now both continuites have DIVIDED to an unbelievable  extent OF ONE OF THE HIGHEST ORDERS.

Basically if an anime doesnt continue than READ THE DAMN MANGA. Because its about the STORY CONTENT, not the means of its media. THATS how Inuyasha became an anime in the first place.

Hm, it gets on my nerves when people complain about how horrible the anime endind was when in fact it was far from completion in 2004. It just neVer occured to thrm to read the manga and all they did was whine?! Goodness

A commenter noted above that we should stop complaining so the producers will want to finish the animation.
Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they finish the animation back in late spring and then bring out the announcement for fall 2009? (and are now just airing IY while preparing for their next project?)

Episode 2 Kagura's death (Chapter 374)
Episode 8 is Kikyo's death (Chapter 465).
How in the hell does anyone place 90+ chapters worth of material into 5 episodes?! I don't understand! At this rate, it'll take another 10 episodes to "complete" InuYasha.
Oh how I hate the rushing.
