Episode 3: Meidou Zangetsuha

As expected, this week covered the Kitsune Youjutsu Exam, Mujina, and the introduction of Meidou Zangetsuha. Much to my relief, the pace was slowed down considerably and didn't feel rushed this week.

Quick note: A serious fansub group has picked up the series – Taka Fansubs.

Episode 4 will broadcast in Japan at 2:40 PM EDT on  October 24th.

Chapters covered: 383, 384, 385, 409 (pages), 410 (pages), 411 (pages), 506 (adapted), 512 (pages),

Given the title, one would expect Sesshoumaru and the Meidou Zangetsuha to be front and center. Sadly, this wasn't the case. Sesshoumaru and the Meidou Zangetsuha were only covered in the first two and last two minutes of the episode. Most of the episode was dedicated to Shippou and his pals, Examinees #39, #26, and #53, pranking Inuyasha and the gang. After that, it was a short but sweet battle with Mujina.

Overall, I liked how Sunrise handled things this week and how amazing the Meidou Zangetsuha looks animated.

Preview impressions: Next will be mostly dedicated to Dragon-scaled Tessaiga and a faster pace. The episode will apparently be covering Ryuujin, True Dakki, Toushuu, Kai, vs Kouga and the introduction of Byakuya. I wonder if the Ghost Cat chapters will be shoved in there too…

I don't have nice HD images this week, but hopefully the images I do have will make up for it. Plus, I added a few of my old scanlation joke pages that were  tangentially relevant to the episode. (No, Byakuya did not show up this week…)

Well after the first 2 episodes felt like should have been covered in at least 6 if not 8, I was happy to feel that at most today's ep would have benefitted from just an extra episode, maybe 1.5. The old anime would have done Kitsune School alone, but spending over half a new episode on it also felt like enough. Still some quick transitions but we're slowing down a lot too.

It's out on ShonenSunday.com, but it's not subbed. Why is that?

They better not break their promise! They said to subb after it airs in Japan!

Thanks again Starks!  Well, speaking from someone who co-owns a manga translation group, I can tell you that it is not easy to translate RAW material.  It's quite time consuming.  I'm quite sure that the sub episode will be posted shortly.   If you read the manga, you can pretty much follow the episode and know what is going on.

Viz translated the ep. Hulu is just having subtitle problems like it did two weeks ago.

The sub at this point is out, go check.
One note: Kag's grandpa was used to introduce the idea of the "right wish" on the Shikon no Tama

I liked this episode. It was nicely slowed down and didn't feel rushed. Overall a good LOL episode. I loved when Inuyasha just hit the other sword and it broke in half. The expression on his face was just too funny, Hahaha :).  Anywho perfect pacing!

Viewership has dropped. Maybe people tuned in just for Kagura's death? Nonetheless, these numbers are just pretty bad.

With how fast they are passing this it makes me think

man…WHY did they even do this? It just makes it look like they're trying to get it over with

I"m ESTATIC that they even continued it and that we get to see scene's animated
but it takes the pleasure away when its so rushed 8I

I thought this episode was great. Slowed down the pace a lot, which is good.
P.S, loved the joke pages Starks! XD

I agree with you on your statement, Curly. It's still too rushed and there's no pleasure in a rushed job.

After I saw Sessh sitting on the rock, I got up from seat and started ranting to myself about how sunrise totally screwed up the fight scene with Mouryomaru. I haven't been this riled up about IY since Sessh's mom was introduced. I suppose sunrise did something right by making me crazy but still, WTF are they doing???

I think at some point in the distant future someone is going to animate the manga the way it should've been done in the first place — chronologically and slowly.

Guess this was their reason for their current pacing matters in the anime -__-"

Regarding the pacing…

You have to keep in mind that we're used to reading this stuff in a book…
You talk way faster than you write.
Of course it's going to be faster than what we're used to when it's in motion.

Kp, thanks for the link. Wow, that really puts this series into perspective.
Although I never take interviews at face value– entertainment has too many politics– if the director opted for a shorter series, he obviously didn't understand what made the first series so memorable. I think everyone else here has echoed my feeling that the pace of the first series is what made it great. The slow pace of the first series really reflects a romanticized view of medevil life. This episode really brings some of that back. I hope they don't go and speed it up again in the next episode just to wrap up the quest.

I wasn't as crazy about the episode. The short scenes with Sesshomaru learning Meidou Zangetsuha, even though that's the title of the episode, was a bit of a let down. There was humor in the episode and there were several parts that I laughed at, but the minute I laughed I stopped.

I was really pleased they included the part where Sango strokes Miroku's butt, thinking he was Shippo and searching for his tail. I laughed for only a second, but then the humor just died suddenly. I was used to them dragging out the humor like Sango gets this really embarassed face and Miroku is either smirking or just looking confused. Then there was that part where Miroku is flirting with all the girl kitsunes and if I remember right, I don't think we ever heard Miroku asking them to bear his children. I can't remember if he did that in the manga or not either. The minute we see Miroku flirting, we see Sango immediately using her slayer methods to bring down their disguises.

The humor I died at laughing though is the part where Miroku pulls a flustered Sango into his arms and when she relaxes, other Mirokus' start joining in and she realizes they were all kitsunes. That was funny. I also loved the part where that big demon guy was going on about how his Dakki sword would kill Inuyasha and in mid rant, Inuyasha slices his sword in half looking ultimately pissed off. I also kinda liked the part where Shippo transformed into his balloon and Inuaysha pulled a string that said "Don't pull" Lol, idiots will pull. And also- "Inuyasha is a moron" Lol, Shippo was just begging for that beating.

All in all, I thought the episode was ok, I'm glad to see once again, that humor that drew me into Inuyasha.
