Episode 7: The Mausoleum of Mount Azusa

Chapters covered: 452-458

(To hell with NTV for delaying the episode for an extra 15 minutes!)

Just as predicted. A literal cliffhanger ending. Sunrise accomplished everything that needed to be accomplished this week: Spiderwebs, Kohaku/Sesshoumaru vs Byakuya, Mount Azusa. They could've given another minute or two to Kagome on Mount Azusa, but I think Kagome's rant coupled with the use of  "Futari no Kimochi" that old background song whose name currently escapes me (please help me out!) really made up for it. Also, poor Kochou and Asuka.

Next week will mark the end of Kikyou. Much like how episode 124 was the defining moment of the first series, episode 8 will be the defining moment of this series. While I expect a well-done episode that not only does chapters 459-465 justice, I'd also expect that Sunrise uses the opportunity to make the scenes as powerful as possible beyond what might be necessary. This is perhaps where Patches' mention of new anime-only material for next week may come into play.

One final note: SUNRISE BETTER KEEP THE CHEST ARROW!

I really liked this episode but I think I'm going to like the next one even more. Though I think I'll also be bauling by the end of it. Reading the chapter when it came out had me in tears, so add color, the voices and beautiful music and I'll use up a whole box of tissues lol.

I didn't tear up for Kikyo's death in the manga. The sorrow I felt was mostly caused by Inuyasha/Kagome's pain in overcoming her loss. She was a dynamic character who fueled many complications throughout the plot, and so for that reason I'm a bit sad to see her go.
This episode was great!  I'm on the edge of my seat. Can't a week pass by already? >_<
I was reading through the manga and saw the Hiraikotsu upgrade arc. I can't wait for IY to get drunk! haha Plus there's still the Kaou, hell, and battle between Sess/Inu arcs… So many possibly good episodes coming up. Yipee! ^^
I haven't watched the OVA, but I think "Black Tessaiga" already covered the battle between Tessaiga/Tenseiga, right? So are the animators going to just remake that arc once more for the series? I'm guessing so. We'll see.

Hey, Starks-
When you're referring to Kikyou kicking it, are you saying this will be the animated version of one of the only chapters late into the manga Takahashi wrote very well? If so, I'm soooo down for that!  I hope the fansub pops up soon after.

They stuck to the script. I was wondering how'd they pull of Kag's rant on Kikyou as the little mark kept getting closer to the end but they managed to pull it off fairly well. I agree, a couple of more minutes would've been nice. sunirse could do away with the ending since it sucks ass and devote more to the script.

I think the writers have finally hit their stride. The rest of the episodes should be on this pace and give the final chapters of this series some justice. Glad to see it slow down a bit and stick to the script!!

I'm going to be bawling next week… my heart skipped a beat and my eyes got watery just at the preview where Kikyo said "I have finally become an ordinary woman" and then her tear filled eyes closed.  The artwork looks beautiful… Sigh such a tragic life… RIP Kikyo.

Oh and btw… looking at the screencap did anyone notice that Kochou's eyes are like Kagome's and Asuka like Kikyo's? Just thought I'd point that out XD

I know the focus was on Kagome's inner turmoil over Kikyo and Inuyasha and all, and it could indeed likely have played a bit longer for Kagome to belt our her feelings, but I'm perversely fixated on what wasn't said:

Jaken:  "Lord Sesshoumaru…quick, you have to SUCK out the poison!"

*smack*

Okay, maybe it is for the best that we didn't see that.

I swear these are just getting better and better
hopefully it keeps up even after the whole KIkyo Death arc
It feels like they rushed those others to get up to this part
these are my favorite next couple of chapters
well besides Kikyo
and may I say that moutain cliff is SPECTACULARLY colored
gosh thats beautiful

and why does it seems the episodes are always extra special when it has something to do with Kikyo dieing, or just focusing on Inuyasha and Kikyo in general?
I love the Inuayasha and Kagome based episodes but they never seem as powerful…unless Kikyo is tied in. Which makes me a little sad
I hope they do well in the Episode with Inu and Kag's special little moment
even if it is short

Ah, Kagome sticking up for herself was SUCH a refreshing change… Proud of you :)

I'm expecting next episode to be good as well, but the most anticipated episode (for me, anyway) is 9, with the introduction of Sesshomaru's mom and his journey into Hell and what not. Like other people have said, Sunrise has hit its stride with this.

Next week: Kikyo's death!

Im right here with my review. I wish i had been here earlier though but schedules suck, and yet the anime Episode 7/ beyond will not.

I'm impressed. Sunrise is finally getting their asses handed to them by fans or they are making better decisions, based on the amount of material, and where/what point they are at in adaptating the story.

The scene of everyone recooperating starts off very well, though i wish it there wouldve been a beginning point of the show that featured Naraku reabsorbing Onigumo, it was like that in the manga, plus it could've seemed more inciteful to get that much information out in the first part. iTs just a desireable opinion because in Chapters 452 to the 458 Arc this is how it starts out, instead in the anime we cut to Koga, Kikyo and Inuyasha discussing Naraku. Im saying this because developing on the plot line first, resulted in the adience foreshadow later events. That happened in the first TV series, and is less noticable here.

The scene in which Naraku reabsorbs Onigumo's spirit on the remains of the Dead Mount Hakurei, is something that needs to be questioned. In the manga, the execution was exactly the same, so this either means another plothole for the series or it will be explained later. This scene to me, mattered the most that just wasnt touched upon enough.

In Blunt

Naraku removed the Infant- His Physical LifeForce.

The Head of the demon in the destroyed Mount Hakurei, can only be brought so far as a deduction of Onigumo's spirit. Naraku's "Human" heart. The Head which looks exactly like Naraku, yet has a somewhat different voice. If that is the original voice actor of Onigumo in his past life in episode flashbacks to 50 years ago, than we may know a little more character details without hesitation. Coming upon the cast info to that extent of a minor character is diffcult to find.

This "reabsorption" inclines me to wonder about the incarnation. It is clear, he is the remants of the failed Shell's used to create the original infant, in the stead of carrying Naraku's Heart. Naraku at the Mountain claims to need his human heart as the incarnation spells out. The retched desires, wicked feelings, and lingering attachments help to give the power of Darkness to Naraku's Jewel, which to Naraku, elaborates that it can help him avoid being purified by Kikyo, as it has taken over 140 episodes to figure out, as of witnessing Kohaku with Kikyo during his Naraku's absortion of Moryomaru.

Post Bluntness

In short, i wish to ask about this scene. Naraku's takes back the incarnation, who Wllingly allows Naraku to take him back? Upon Absorption, Onigumo's Sprit takes on the form of a Spider? Though it was originally know that Onigumo had the mark of a Spider on his back, as well as Naraku. Onigumo made a pact with a Spider-Demon(the leader of the thousands of Demons) who showed up in the cave all those decades ago, As far the Tragic Love Song of Destiny Episode tells, anyway.

Please Note i am not discussing Cuts, I am asking questions about the story itself.

Following this, we get a comedic scene of Koga, referenceing Inuyasha and Kikyo's past, and how Inuyasha treats Kagome.  One or two lines of the comedic dialigue in the original was cut but boy did they keep the rest in there. I just feel that they were jumping lines a little bit.

As for reviewing the rest, i was hopeful that Naraku would step in earlier and fight the main characters not accompanying Kagome. The only thing that happens here in terms of Fighting action is Byakya making his presence known to Kohaku, him escaping from the illusions, and The man of Illusionary Dreams dodgeing  Sesshomaru's Tenseiga attack, which results in him fleeing back to Naraku empty handed. To be honest, according to manga, that happened later in the next Naraku fight from here, but i will over- look it, because it does not impact the overall execution in any major or minor way, though if not for cuts to this series, it wouldve played sequentially as it did in the original books.

One detail i would like to note is that despite the redeeming pace this time, i would ve enjoyed seeing this Azusa Mausolieum- towards Kikyo's death, done in three episodes. There wasn't a lot of action in this episode, Mostly the elaboration of Inuyasha, Kagome, and Kikyo's feelings towards each other, and im glad it ISNT the traditonal fangirl riots of Kikyos "I hate you for stealing my boyfriend", or Kagome yelling at Inuyasha for seeing the other woman, Im glad Sunrise is not doing that anymore, and expanding upon the girls feelings between each other by outrightly stating that Kikyo and Kagome's perceptions to Inuyasha make them netither superior, NOR inferior, given that both of them have devlopments with the man they love, that the other girl does not have or know about in general.

That is likely a bias statement coming from me as someone who will NEVER understand Fangirlisms, but i dont care.

I was a little bored, but its better than watching cuts. Im actually going to thank Sunrise for making this episode an average one. This show needs at least that kind of praise. And if Episode 8 is going to feature anime Original material, than I can only begin to ask as to what to speculate on. Its that kind of thing which gets people talking. I hope the original animation studio material is an ADDITION, and Not A Cut, Of original Sequence or Script Dialogue. We'll know next week!!

One thing i have to note is that as much as much as the episodes are getting better and cut openings of small story arcs altogether, I.E. The Mosquito Filler, Moryomaru summoning demons to devour Koga's fellow wolf tribe members by having demons emgerge from the wolf tribe bodies and absorbing them in the process. Yes, that was in the manga folks.

As much as there might be certain stories skipped, I wish to see the YamaArashi Arc, adaptated someday, because that expands on the storylines of Naraku using Inuyasha's Adamant Barrage Spears to resurrect dead demons to cause havok towards the enviornment and Inuyasha, for those who dont enjoy filler executed 100%.

On a side note, i really hope Inuyasha and Sango learn what the Meiojus Armored Shell is when Naraku reveals where he is hiding the Shikon Jewel, which is likely to be CUT or NOT be in episode 19 or 20 of this new series.

Im checking out these new episodes with the lunar Moon cycle to see if there are certain "time gaps" that skip open opportunies to set the Cut manga fillers "in between" core episodes.

I really do wish to see some of the cut filler as OVA's on DVD/BD  formats in the future. What im saying isnt crazy. The way George Lucas produced the StarWars Movie Episodes 4, 5, 6, before 1, 2, and 3, is.

I am super excited for the rest of the series after watching this episode. The pacing was perfect and they excluded the unimportant parts to make room for all the moving material. I was slightly disappointed that they excised the chat between Sango and Kohaku in which Sango realizes that being with Kikyo is helping to redeem Kohaku.

I found this one part funny in which Naraku was absorbing Onigumo. At the end of his rant, it sounded like he said "Inuyasha-sama" I may be mistaken and maybe he said something after Inuyasha that the subbers thought it was too vulgar or impossible to sub and left it at that. But I could've sworn he said Inuyasha-sama.

Next week's episode is going to have me bawling. Kikyo really does die and they still kept that corny title. Yet I think "Among the Stars" is much better compared to "As the Stars Twinkle" And yay! They kept in the kiss between Inuyasha and Kikyo. Though I am a worshipper of Inu/Kag, the kiss between two tragic lovers was a very powerful, intense moment for me. Now add voices, Kikyo's theme, and color and I'll be flooding the computer room with my tears.

I am so looking forward to next week! Wish it would hurry up and get here.

^^ Inukagfan, what Naraku said was "… soshite Inuyasha kisamamo"  which is a very demeaning way to refer to someone (so it would be something like, "And you bastard Inuyasha as well"). I find it quite interesting that the "spider/head" thing spoke to Naraku in the same way. Does that mean Onigumo/Naraku's heart sees itself as more important than Naraku? If that's true, it seems the spider <i>allowed</i> itself to be absorbed as if it were a favor to Naraku.

@ Catie, thank you for the clarification. I didn't think Naraku would call Inuyasha his master, but that's what it sounded like when I first heard it.

One thing that really bothers me about the series, and this might be a bit picky on my part, but it really irritates me. They keep changing the dialogue and events of Kikyo's death. In the episode, the Mausoleum of Mount Azusa, Kikyo has visions of the day she died, but she was standing near him instead of far away as was originally executed. And also, I found it agitating that Kikyo was up leaning against the sleeping Inuyasha even though before she kneeled on the ground in great pain. It happened in broad daylight, but in Kagome's visions, it happened at night. Then everytime they do a flashback, and not just in this new series but in the old ones too, they change the dialogues.

I liked how Kikyo's death was executed in the special: A Tragic Love Song of Destiny. I wish they would stick to it. Even Rumiko keeps changing the situation in the manga. That might just be me being a tad bit too picky though. ^.^
