Episode 9: Sesshoumaru in the Underworld

Chapters covered: 466 through most of 471

First off, Viz may be in a bit of trouble this week. Because the episode aired two hours later than usual on NTV, Viz thought it would be appropriate to violate NTV's first-to-air rights and uploaded the complete subbed episode while it was still airing.

With respect to the episode itself, while I watched it on the rather fugly KeyHoleTV stream, the screencaps were quite definitive in establishing this week's episode as extremely well-animated. The background music was not as good though. The original theme for Tessaiga was used during Tenseiga's 100 soul revival. Sessmom's (voiced by Yoshiko Sakakibara) dry wit and Mother-of-the-Year (trademarked by Rosa Ushiromiya) qualities were left in tact. Unfortunately, the Hell scenes, which seemed like hours in the manga, felt slightly rushed. When I say rushed, I don't mean rushed like the first few episodes of Final Act, instead I mean that the Hell scenes would've benefited from an additional 1-2 minutes.

Anyway, next week is Kaou and he is apparently being voiced by Ryuusei Nakao (best known for the voice of Frieza in DBZ/DBKai and Mayuri Kurosutchi in Bleach).

Man, about time! I was worried for hours if you've forgotten about this. I found out that the episode was out hours ago! I have to agree with you that it felt like a rush. Oh, well. Good episode, nonetheless.

Fluffette was prettier in the manga *-*;
I think there was some substance lacking from this episode, too. Everything seemed… quieter/slower paced than it should have and I dunno, Sessh's emotions seemed more powerful in the manga.

good, now I can give my full thoughts on it…And since I'm a Sesshomaru fan this means I'll complain alot :p

The episode itself did not make me sad, it just reminded me of what happened in the manga, which was more depressing then the episode. And then there was Sesshomaru… I know he's emotionless and all, but…damn on this one it was nothing O.o just a bit of anger. The only part that sort of tugged at my chest was "Rin, wake up. Rin." which was still a bit emotionless…but other then that, not much.

I kinda of like the Kikyo part in the beginning, because it would be strange not to have the title character in an episode until the end, but still, it took a bit of time…

By far my favorite animation was Sesshomaru transforming and circling his mother once, she looked pissed ^^

And Koga's exit, it seemed a little longer then in the manga, which I think is good, it said goodbye more instead of making it seem like he may be back like in the manga. But it was another time taker. (Wow, a cload shaped like Sesshomaru's mom. -.-)
I liked, Sesshomaru's mom's voice too, made her seem like a b*tch, heheh. And her little sob made me laugh.

Oh, about 8 seconds wasted on Sesshomaru's mom suggested that thing tto kill, at least That's what I think. And throughout the episode, they made Jaken cry wierd lol

Yes, so this episode made me laugh more then cry. Another example would be Sesshomaru's empty sleeve being blown, I couldn't hold it in, I just laughed, and each corpse they saw was repeated which was also funny…

Kohaku being blown in the wind was a bit funny, though I tensed a little when Sesshomaru's whip came out to grab him, I actually liked that, but it took more time! Geez! Nor did I like the music in the background when Sesshomaru used tenseiga.

I liked his mother's lecture, she got strict in the middle of it, which was how I kind of how I heard it in my head when I read it.
It was perfect from the beginning of the lecture to right when RIn opened her eyes. Then it just went downhill for me. They could have let RIn ocuhg one more time, Sesshomaru's hand could have moved a TINY bit slower. Before flashing on Sesshomaru's face, it could have shown a frame of both tof them, THEN Sesshomaru's face and so on…

God who am I so picky?!?!!? And this is the most I've ever typed that isn't crap like, SESSHOMARU SESSHOMARU, SESSHOMARU!

First, in the manga sesshoumaru's face showed more emotions. I cried when I read the manga and I expected to cry by watching the anime too but that wasn't the case. Instead, I fell disappointed and I just wanted to kill the director of this piece of shit!!!!!

Second, just like our friend MooMoo-of-Doom said, everything was too fast!!! Why can they just include some dramatic slow motion scenes? Dam it!!!!

Third, the music!!! They ruined it with the background music!!
Last year, I made a bunch of videos with almost all the chapters of the manga including the hell arc and instead of using that horrible music they use for the anime as a background, I used the song "every hearth" by "Boa." I made a lot of people cry with that video and I still can't believe it!!! That I, a person who is not a director was able to make people cry by just adding a good song as background music!!!

I am very disappointed!!!!!!!!
Here is the video that my friend made which is similar to the one I made last year. (The video is in Spanish)

The only thing that I was disappointed with was that in the manga, Sesshoumaru seemed to have more emotion. In the episode, there wasn't much emotion.

But besides that, this episode was great!

Well.. this was the ep I was waiting for. I was semi-impressed until Sessh went into hell. Like most said, it felt rushed. But I think one of the things that bothered me the most was that, in the manga after Sessh leaps and saves Kohaku and Rin from falling he says: "Don't make me waste time unnecessarily. This arm is meant only for holding a sword!" Or something like that.  So when he dropped Tenseiga near the end to cling to Rin, it was a very powerful moment. In the anime, for some arbitrary unknown reason, they cut that bit out but instead added a made up POS about Kohaku being saved by his light-whip. I lost it at that point and screamed at my PC. His whip doesnt work like that, damn it! It's made up of Youkai energy that cuts through flesh and steal alike with easy… it should have took Kohaku's foot off! Why did they feel the need to cut out a very important line from Sessh and add that crap instead.  We could have done without the made up stuff and had a few minutes more of Sessh love instead.
Like others said, the whole emotionless-ness of the ep was the other thing that  bothered me also;  I got more emotion out of reading the text then I did hearing Sesshy's voice. Emotionally at the end in the anime when he practically shouted at Rin, "you're fine!" –it was like a command or something.. where in the manga the whole tone felt softer and I would've imagine his voice to be soft and reassuring and probably a little bit relieved.  And of course the rest… I dunno in the manga he seemed to be panicking when he couldn't save Rin.. and later sad/angry of course, but in the ep it was like laadeedah oh well.
Meh. It was nicely animated… but I had high expectations after Kikyo's death ep ;/ I feel let down over all.
Sidenote.. shouldn't Shippou's line in the beginning have have been "they probably *dont* mean it" hm? And Sessmom should have been "*You* should not feel sad or fear," in references to using the Meido stone? (I watched on Hulu so)
It was so nice when Kouga and Kagome huggled though! ^^ I noticed too the clouds Inuyasha looks at are shaped like a dog demon form hehe….

I agree with most others that the emotion was horribly done. There should have been more emotion added in, especially with the whole sword drop deal. I did wonder why in the heck they would add wind and make Kohaku fly off only to be saved by Sesshoumaru. That part was so unnecessary. I wanted to laugh at that point. The whole thing really did seem much funnier than it should have been. I enjoyed seeing Sessh's mom animated. Quite frankly she showed so much more emotion. I love how Sesshoumaru skips completely over his mother's question about eating the children to asking about Tensaiga. Too funny, although I'm almost positive he responded to this in the manga with "ridiculus" or "nonsense".! Sessh's mom gets tough at the end though, loved that!
Overall, I can't say that the anime did this part any justice. However, I will say that though I was a bit disappointed at first,  when I went back and watched it again, I allowed myself not to take it so seriously. I laughed at the silly things. Sesshoumaru's interaction with his mother is simply fun! From the circling barking, angry looking momma in dog form at Sessh's presence, to the 'hollow words' and 'spiteful child' comments, I snickered. I almost felt as if they were giving us Sessh fans this part of the manga, animated, because we would have probably blown up otherwise. If you think about it, they could have very well jumped over this without too much trouble and could have explained later that Sessh's Meidou simply got bigger by training!
It's true what they say: If you want the true story, you've got to go straight to the source! (sighs) Oh well

It has come to this Sesshoumaru's attention that I, this Sesshoumaru, was not given the just time due to my royal person, this Sesshoumaru, concerning the time I, Lord Fluffy….er….this Sesshoumaru,  spent in Hell in the manga saving Rin's ass as well as that of that Kohaku kid, who arbitrarily decided to follow me around like Rin and Jaken did.  This Sesshoumaru is starting to sense a pattern here and also the fact that I, kono Sexxxy-Sama, can not get anyone over 3 feet tall and attractive to follow my royal person around. Therefore, I, this Sesshoumaru, will not rant about the lack of time Sunrise devoted to my situation but about my PET name — Fluffy.
Stop Calling Me Fluffy!
My name is Sesshoumaru, dammnit! Call me by my proper name! It is spelled F-L-U-F…….ARRRGH!!!!! Now you see what you have made this Sesshoumaru do! You made me spell my regal and given name as F-L-U-F-F…ARRRGGGHH!!! You have vexed this Fluffy-sama twice over. Never again! I will reach out with my left arm and throttle you, like the shit-stain you are! What!? You are laughing at this Sesshoumaru! Do you deem me stupid? How dare you!!! You will never call this Sesshoumaru-sama 'Fluffy' or 'Fluffy-sama' or 'Fluffy-chan' or 'Fluffy' anything! As my name indicates, I am the 'Killing Perfection' and I will pull out a can of Fluffy's special WHOOP ASS out on anyone who would dare call me FLUFFY! You will DIE!! DIE!! DIE!!! My name is SESSHOUMARU!!! SPELL IT…… F-L-U-F-F-Y!

None of what you guys have said will stop me from desireing that beautiful MILF. I wonder if she'd fuck a human with an exception. Shes lonely since her exHusband died and whos human recent wife gave birth to a half demon child. If anything I wonder what she does during her day. Sesshomaru's mother could use some male company.

You guys ever think the dub in english might end up being better than the Japanese?

I mean i watch the old episodes and the english speaks to me more. but i heard Sesshomaru's mother and i understand her seriousness next to her playful personality.

What if the english dub might put more emotion. I can kind of read it as though its Sesshomarus voice in the character of the comic, Viz Media and its dub of Inuyasha has never let me down when it comes to characters like Sesshomaru, Koga, and Naraku and shit.

i wonder if David Kaye reads about his character in the manga. Personally i want to see the english dub more than the Japanese. As a person who was born in America and raised here, its only natural to want something like that.

This ep was Sesshoumaru's majorly MEH-tastic adventure into hell. Since when did his whip double as a saving device? Some animator must've playing the Indiana Jones lego video game when he/she was drawing the cells to this sequence.  The extra few seconds in this lame sequence could've been devoted to missing scenes such as the answering of  "do you eat kids?" and "my arm is meant to hold a sword" and Sessh panicking at being told Rin wasn't breathing anymore. It was too rushed and there was definitely no emotion. The manga is better.
Meh! Bleh! Keh! Feh!

What happened to the "Inuyasha Anime Examiner" ._.? I loved to read his reviews xD!

BTW, I had the same feelings about the missed emotions in the episode… and true, the Kohaku and the whip thing was funnier that it actually should have been xD!

I wonder.. will Sessh using his whip to save Kohaku lead to some weirdass fanfics where he uses his whip to train lions, swing through trees like Tarzan, and snatch weapons out of his enemy's hands ala Indiana Jones?
