Episode 11: Kanna's Gravestone
神無の墓標 (Kanna no bohyou)

Chapters covered: Rest of 476 through the end of 480

Note to self, the episode title continues to piss me off.

This episode reminds of how much Rumiko enjoyed killing her lolis. Rin twice and then Kanna.

At any rate, I really like how everything was handled this week. A few of the manga's subtleties were brought out and expanded upon. For example, not many people will recall that Kanna and the mirror monster hunted down Inuyasha's group in the cave. Such a short event was given a minute or two. Also, with respect to Kanna's concealed rebellious attitude, we didn't see more of that this week further than what was seen in the manga. I have no problem with that since Sunrise had very little to work with in the build-up to the battle. Kanna also was quite the talker, though not in the manner you'd expect. Her speaking role was limited to announcing attacks, questing her freedom, and declaring that the light will defeat Naraku. Animation was spot on again this week. I really don't care much for or notice the differences between animation directors, so I'm really not one to make comments here.

Anyway, next week is Yakurou Dokusen. With the preview delayed until Monday, when the screenshots appear on 2ch, or when ytv updates their page, I really can't make a good judgment call on how Sunrise is going to pull this off in a single episode. The summary suggests that 7 chapters worth of material will be covered. If the Youdoku story gets about 5 minutes and then the rest is devoted to Yakurou Dokusen, I can see it working. But then again, 7 chapters in a single episode won't be pretty.

Too bad Kanna didn't had so much importance in the manga like Kagura or Hakudoushi…

I don't like the guy who animated this one.
Every person's mouth is weirdly shaaaped. What the hell?

I also don't like this whole Viz-uploads-it-on-Monday business. At least tell us why, damn.

They better not mess up next week's episode. :O

Oh and I wish they showed the previews on KeyHole… >.>

But you have to watch it at a specific time, just like on regular TV.

It won't air again on a channel that viewable on KeyHole. As far as I know, there's no way to watch the ytv broadcast of Final Act online. You'll have to wait for a raw, sub, or Monday. Which ever comes first.

What is a Lolli? Like, a lil kid? And why does InuYasha change into a demon even though he's holding Tetsusaiga? I read the comcic but it didnt say why I think. Maybe subttitles will explain it.

@AN

It was because the sword was drawing what power it could from Inuyasha's demonic energy, while also keeping his senses intact and not going all psychotic on them.

Pretty good episode, I thought they did good with that battle in this episode. RIP Kanna. =(

Definantly one of the more sad deaths in Inuyasha in my opinion
Kanna was one of my favorites even though the first series never really focused on her

Also I'll never understand why they change animation directors almost every episode. In the first series the style never stayed the same for more than two episodes. It drove me insane
wonderful art and clean animation one episode
then the next would be insanly choppy and the drawings looks rather mediocre

With The Final Act, for the most every episode has had decent animation. If not the best in the whole series. (I pay very close attention to these things, I'm an animation enthusiast)
My favorite animation director is the one who made the episodes like "Fateful Night in Togenkyo"
The art is pleasing to the eye, and the animation is my favorite

also I don't remember when Tetsaiga could put up barriers either XD

haha I also reliezed from the winter themed ending of the last episode that I've been here for almost a year now.
I just changed my account name

Was it necessary to add more kagura'scenes it took all my sadness away! D:
I really love Kagura u_u
kanna is done perfect! :D
and It's my impression or naraku has got longer hair (and more) in the anime rather than manga?! o.o

Something that I never understood in Inuyasha's manga/anime is the barefoot thing. Why there are characters that use sandals (like Miroku, Kanna and Sango) and others that simply goes without any footwear (like Kagura, Kohaku and Rin)? Why don't everyone use sandals?

Why do the producers of the new series hate Sango and Miroku so much?
No mosquito vampire, no cat demon, no porcupine demons, and now a severely abridged bone woman story.
Attention Producers: some of us actually care about the supporting cast.  Give them the attention and respect that Takahashi did when she wrote the stories.

@Ginger: It's hard for them to include everything because they are limited to 26 episodes. I wish those things could be animated too, but it's just not realistic given the constraints.
I'm so excited for the next episode!

I agree that supporting characters are being neglected. But most of the Miroku and Sando stuff wasn't important to the story until the last eighty or so chapters, so I understand why it was eliminated.

Also… so they arrre covering both those arcs in the next episode. : O
Very curious as to how it'll work out.
Hopefully it won't be a trainwreck.

I always thought Kanna's death sucked in both the anime and now the manga — sucked for her, that is. She was just used and abused by Naraku the whole time and since he didn't need her anymore, he just threw her away like a rag doll thinking she had no feelings, which she obviously had. Just because you project nothing doesn't mean you are nothing. It's always irked me that she didn't want to die and seemed to have no choice in the matter since she was Naraku's puppet. I wished she could've had a choice and could've lived — I think it would've been kinda nice if she had lived. It was sad she had to go the way she did. One moment here and the next, gone. If she had chosen to fight, she would've lived.

Long live Kanna!

You will be missed like Kagura!

One more note, I am concerned about the ending — Sunrise better give some real time to it because a 1/2 hour just won't cut it. An hour or 45 minutes would be nice! Its obviously a very important part to the completion of the series and devoting some time to it is important to me and I hope to all other IY fans.

A part of me wished that RT would start an IY Part 2, but I know that will prolly never happen, so I'll just hope some talented writer will do it and make me happy! :)

Levia, I guess we'll see how this next episode goes.  I know not everything that I miss was 100% relevant (I think some of it was) , but what I liked about the manga was the slow build, the breadcrumbs of emotion and character development…  for me the battles and the 'level-ups' have always been secondary.
I'm just so disappointed in the new series so far.  The few things they've "done right" don't begin to make up for it.

me as well
I've always liked the special effects and fighting
but the character build up is what got me into Inuyasha
not the battles or awesome moves
sweat character moments between Inuyasha and Kagome and even the whole group together are what I wait and hope for almost every episode

Inuyasha Anime ExaminerNo Gravatar

December 19, 2009 @ 4:31 am

Well folks, once again its time for another review, and like Kagura's, this is a special one for today.

Today we have the "execution" (used in a variety of ways) of Kanna. Naraku finally puts Kanna to an openly useful stand, to the same Extent as in the beginning of the series when she was first used to suck the souls of Inuyasha, and his friends. Kanna's debut was on the stance of testng Kagome's Spiritual power, and devouring her Soul in Naraku's favor.

Other than that Kanna has never really done anything, but give assignments to Allies, or Servants of her creator, while he is in his absence. Kannas has really only been used to fight, twice in this series but that doesnt rule out that her potential has gone to waste. Saying that it did would be a mistake in my opinion.

Some of the subplots in the entire series with the examples of Mount Hakurei, Spying on Kagura's much earlier attempts at Betrayal, Using her mirror for Narakus observance of Inuyasha's Battles with other enemies, spotting for Sesshomaru, Koga, and Kikyo, when being approached into battle, carrying the infant to safe location points, and even going so far as to contain Akago within Moryomaru on the order of Hakudoshi.

There was even a time in the manga where Kanna appared to have been as defective as everyone else Naraku never though Kanna could be, and even Moryomaru as well. Though the subplot in the manga built evidence to explain that Naraku diliberately attacked Kanna so that she would flee to Moryomaru and make it appear as though she "Supposedly" betrayed Narakus upon her masters secret order of locating strong demons for Moryomaru to devour, and protect his armor to the extent in which he could ONLY be greatly wounded against Narakus earlier empowerment of Inuyasha's Sword, long enough for the Infant to be driven to use his creation to confront Naraku.

Kanna is an incarnaton of Naraku in the form of a 10 year old. She a LOLI, lols. Dont start telling me that Kanna is sexy, and worth having an orgasm around. JK or am I? Hey I didnt invent the Loli category. Im just rolling with it LoL, or Loli ha ha!

As stated before, Kanna is an incarnation of Naraku, with special features that give absolutely more Advantage to Naraku, over his enemies. Within Mount Hakurei, Kanna had the ability to walk and teleport, through one of the most powerful and well known demonic purification barriers in the series, given that she has no Demonic Aura. She is Mu. She is the Empty Void, with no smell, or any otherwise way to discover her presence, in which greatly gives her an advantage over Inuyasha, all in the Main Antagonist's favor.

The powers of her mirror as seen in todays episode come off a bit as something both new, and used Prior. Kanna's powers have fully unveiled, though this would not be the first time. Her powers include the ability to contain souls from people, and into her mirror to control them. She even wielded Kaguyas Mirror in Inuyasha the Movie 2, as though it had been her own.
Up against Kagome and Princess Kaguya, Kanna has been proven not to be able to suck every soul out, though.

She Unleased a mirror monster that can copy and absorb the power of Inuyasha sword. All his techniques (Wind Scar, Adamant Barrage, Barrier Breaker, and The 2 Dragon Scale Techniques) had been pushed to the test of whether Inuyasha can overcome his own stolen work, or he could be cut down by it.

The Mirror Monster and Kanna had a horrific battle to the death, requiring Kanna to take the damage of the Mirror, to her own body until she shattered. A detail worth mentioning is that the power of the protective barrier around Inuyasha has never been seen to the extent of protecting him with a surrounding shield. Rumiko gave Inuyasha that power before, but its like the backlash wave in the manga I suppose (never appears often). I've seen it with Tensiga however. Something I seemed to forget till now was the light ray original power of the mirror demon to aim at the moving shadow of its own true core.

Meanwhile with Byakuya looking on the sidelines, Inuyasha had his share of trouble and aid, when he transforms into a Fully Fleged Demon. What interested me the first time this happened at the point in the story, which were the circumstances behind it. In the past, Inuyasha had lost control of his mind due to the demonic nature of his half demon blood derived from A Great Demon Lord. The Demonic nature of his father, was too much for Inuyasha to contain, that being the reason the Tetsaiga was born.

The reasoning for Inuyashas demonic summoning of his power has changed. This isnt another Crushed/Broken sword story, nor is it an evil demonic sword from hell forcefully empowering the main character out of proportion, and it isnt using the demonic aura of a demons stomach to surround the sacred jewel shard in negative energy because it was barely being kept purified. This occasion's transformation comes from an interconnected chain of consequences (if one chooses to call it that).

The "Cycle" or "Chain" begins with The power on the Tetsaiga used to protect Inuyasha Blood, being stolen into the mirror monsters sword. The "seal" on Inuyashas Demon form becomes broken, letting HIS OWN demonic power empowering the empty original Tessaiga. As long as a lot of Inuyasha's limitless demonic uncontrollable killing urge empowers the sword with the ability to transform into its basic form, than he is in control of his mind. Ironicly when he steals back his own sword's power using his extra power and (by attacking the other sword), he becomes a half demon again, with his strength returned to normal……

As for the rest of the review, I need to say this!! ALL the chapters are animated. Every last panel. There is nothing missed entirely. I enjoy reading the manga about Kannas Death, now and again, but the Anime episodes "Appeal" more to me. Even Kannas character was elaborated on (and by that we all mean her very own feelings Naraku never believed she had throughout the days of her very own existence).

An annoying point made in this series is that Kanna gets fewer lines of Dialouge in Kanketsuhen than in the old series. Two important things she says are repeated once again as her life continues on. She talks of Flowers "Flowers wither and lose thier Hue. Much as I reflect in vain, time lost to the long rain"

She said that in the beginning and end of the episode.
Reminds me of an earlier sentiment from Episode 168.

"As I pass through the lengthy struggle in this fleeting world, I cannot help but long for the midnight moon I once saw"

This is one guaranteed time I am willing to say that Sunrise is pulling this story off in a fine fashion, though this does not excuse what they have done earlier. My simple opinion is that its better to look at the more recent episodes like Among the Stars, Sorrow Soaked Flowers, and this of today OVER complaing about the earlier ones. I still hold hope they will modifiy the disgust that are episodes 1-5!

I do not look at this entire episode as a whole because part of Kanna's recent development, and Naraku's current action against Inuyasha stems from the episode that came before this one. I have nothing more to say other than the anime exclusives give Kanna a wonderful, and yet Tragic Goodbye from her lonely resolve of having nothing of herself other than her own existence. She tries to find the meaning of her life, which appears to be the same as what she herself has always been: Nothing, Nothing at all.

Now I am not going to summarize this entire episode as I have done before because by now everyone should know this story was both done well, and are the same in the book and animation. Im not here to compare the anime and manga all the time, starting with as of now.

I enjoyed the anime expansion on this story. Originally Kanna had just been ordered to commit suicide when the match was over. In this case, Naraku did the same thing, but its revealed that he pushed her to do it, by holding her heart (in the form of glass). Kanna had been told she could go free by Kagome, and it made her remember Kagura once more. Like in the original story, I enjoyed Byakuyas humor, and soon, he does learn to watch his own back when he witnesses Naraku utter cruelty onto one his own.

I heard a comment from a girl on Hulu, stating that Kannas direction in the series makes it hard for people to figure out if creating Kanna the way she was, was either a tragedy or the way Naraku had killed her. After all, Naraku revealed to Kanna that killing herself and her targets, were the reason why she was born. I find that kind of opinion Facinating.

I will give it a near perfect score simply for the creativity of action sequences, emotional impact, and proper adaptation pace. I would've called this title: A Mirror's GraveStone, though just for ambiguation purposes.

ON A SIDE NOTE

Also would it kill for Sunrise to have given Kanna her own music theme. They did it for Kagura. Whether she has one or not, it doesnt change the fact that the fans would like a change of music for once in a long time, again.

I do agree, I wonder why Sunrise hasn't had Mr. Wada do any new tracks for the new series….I mean, I know it's just 26 episodes long, but would it hurt to put in at least one or two new songs?  I like the fact that the music from the first series gives this one a nostalgic feel, but…..what does anyone else think?
