The episode that fell apart…

Episode 16: Hitomiko's Barrier
瞳子の結界 Hitomiko no kekkai

Chapters covered: 507-511

There was nothing particularly special about this week's episode aside from Satsuki Yukino having a field day voicing Kagome. It followed the manga quite faithfully and preserved the emotional depth of the arc. Kagome's situation and despair were amplified by the animation and background music in a way that the manga barely was able to approach.

However, there were two very glaring ass-pulls by Sunrise. At the beginning of the episode and at the end, Kagome Kagome was referenced. While it's no secret that Rumiko named Kagome after the game, Sunrise referenced it to give Hitomiko a back story she didn't have. Secondly, explaining Kagome's natural abilities as being able to see things behind other things was simply absurd as hell. Did Sunrise just want an excuse to draw Loli Kagome? I remember no such bullshit in the manga.

Anyway, next week is Magatsuhi and Bakusaiga. With any luck, the next few episodes will be anything but episodic.

I knew something didn't match the manga…

While "Loli" Kagome maybe was a factor, maybe they wanted to connect Hitomiko to Kagome more? Or they couldn't explain her new ability better, although I bet ironically the manga probably did a better job… *relooks*

The flashback couldn't have taken place when you said it did because a) she specifically said it was 15 years prior, and b) the priest said that Kikyou had already died at that time.  It took place during the 50 years between Kikyou's first death and Kagome's appearance while Naraku was just bumming around looking for something to do.
I happen to like the anime embellishments because they make it like I'm watching something new again instead of just a colored, moving version of something I've already seen.  Not to mention the anime's explanation for Kagome's new power actually WAS an explanation, and not the manga's "Just shoot me and belieeeeeve."

Well, hmmmmm.

Review for this episode is coming next week. Both Hitomiko and the Magasuhi manga Animated storys praises and concerns with be for me to address.

So far I liked seeing Hitomiko given a back story. i didnt see this coming. One annoyance was that Naraku never formally greeted her another creepy visit, in the present. I suppose this ruiling out of what i just said isnt all Black and White.

This episode was selfcontained. At least stories in the past involving Naraku kidnapping Kikyo and using her to take the jewel fragments back from kagome, in Season or 2 had a one to two parter.

When Kikyo was facing Naraku at Mount Hakurei, they didnt show Kikyo fight Naraku and just die all in one episode. At least there was built up to confrontation at several intervals in Episode 123 and 124 of the first series.

Im looking forward to a cliff hanger in these ainmated arcs. Im getting tired of these self-contained episodes. i was actually gonna wait till next week to watch because i got tired of watching the fast paced episodes.

Its as though Sunrise grabbed my attention and made a good impression on me as an audience viewer and fleshed out some more backstory. I enjoyed the Kagome Kagome part. I read about the reference a long time ago and right from the Get Go, i knew it would be more than just a coincidence. I knew something from the reference would play into what I saw today.

I havent read this part of the manga in a long time.  I'll be back next week but why do i feel as though they cut something?

Im sure being in Hell and feeling the struggle of salvaging both lives of preistesses between the fates of corruptted hearts of selfishness or otherwise, would take longer and show even more stress. This episode shouldve been streched a bit. Did it really need the old clips from season 1? Given the Shishinki, and the Sesshomaru confrontation of Totosai, we've had enough recap.

The Black Tessaiga OVA episode is the only justification i see for ANY recaps toward a story built up from what came before it.

When i read the manga, by next week, it will be then that I'll be able to make a more credible comparison.

@ Patches

I didn't do the simple math before I published. I generally don't strike-out lines if I edit within 5 or so minutes of publishing and I simply removed it before the first comment appeared. Nevertheless, I found the flashback to be extraneous. While it wouldn't surprise that Naraku was trolling during those 50 years, save for the final few chapters, he never struck me as someone that would effortlessly kill a bunch of kids that did nothing to piss him off.

I asked this in the forums too, but I don't know how often people post there lately… So, sorry if you're seeing me twice…

I don't think I understand the significance of this story arc.

Is the main purpose of it to tell Kagome that her powers have been sealed?  And is that all, then?  I feel like I'm missing something…

Naraku:  Shoot the miko or die!
Kagome: Noo!  I can't!
Kagome: …
Kagome:  Oh, wait- I CAN shoot her!  Pew pew!

Like I said, I don't think I'm understanding it fully.  :oP

It was nice to see Kagome shouting and being confident, though.

@ Pliny

I never really understood it myself. Throughout the manga, Kagome seemed to have no problems picking up random bows and firing off sacred arrows.

"seeing things behind other things"……sounds like a Monty Python episode and also a whole load of horse shit (i agree with u, starks). i figure sunrise prolly needed to fill up the empty seconds between actual manga scenes to make a full length animated episode, so they came up with that.
hey, we also got to see majorly loli sota.

Wasn’t the point of the story arc for Kagome to learn to shoot her arrows through things. Make them disappear and shoot something not in sight, that's behind other things, with out hitting the other things. For her to learn to have more confidence so that she could shoot and hit something by making the arrow disappear.

As well as her learning of her sealed powers.

Wow. Well then, let me be blunt. I hate Kagome. And this episode didn't help.

"Pew Pew" indeed.

I thought the background stories weren't exactly necessary. I think their trying to put more ephasis/importance on Kagome than needed because she's not getting a lot of attention as the main character or whatever. The end of the series is mostly about the jewel shards and that entails a lot of Sango/Kohaku stuff. Along with the sword completion things which involves a lot of InuYasha/Sesshoumaru stuff. And then the defeting of Naraku calls for some Miroku action as well. Unfortunately that leaves no room for poor Kags, so they have to through some horse poo in there to make up for it.

Good job Sunrise. You farted some Kagome time. ♥

I agree with Patches. The creative freedom the anime wisely used in this episode elaborated on the unexplained detail of the manga. It was more clear with an anecdote of prior use, and I personally enjoyed the episode.
Can't wait for next week!
@Elizabeth And to add on to that, the audience now knows Kagome's full potential has not yet been reached because of the sealed powers, as you mentioned. Although, I believe it's the next episode when her powers become even more restrained while locking eyes with Midoriko.
@Super_Moogles

17 was nice, but the Yellow and Green tendrils of power looked extremely surreal, even for Inuyasha o.0

Loved Jaken's take on Sesshy's transformation: "He is a dog and he doesn't seem too bright…."
It seems someone hasn't been to Petco lately to buy his Science Diet doggy food to give him a shiny coat, strong teeth and bones, keen eyesight and brain power to fight Magatsuhi. Oh well, Sesshy was still smexy in this ep. :)
