David Kaye not voicing Sesshoumaru for Final Act dub

Filed under: Chapters — Starks at 12:21 am on Tuesday, July 20, 2010

In a move that should really surprise nobody, David Kaye announced at TFCon that he will not be reprising his role for Final Act.

Over the past few years, David has pretty much retired from anime voice acting on moved onto sports, moving to California in the process. This development is a bit disappointing considering his intention to be a part of the dub as per a statement last July at Mechacon and does not bode well for the participation of other VAs like Willow Johnson (Kikyou) and Moneca Stori (Kagome).

I don't sympathize with the now-screaming Sesshoumaru fanbase, but I will admit that David Kaye is a great VA who was vastly underused.

Edit: Kelly Sherridan (Sango) remains the only confirmed voice actor.

Edit 2: I'd like a more concrete confirmation, but Willow will be reprising her role as Kikyou: http://blog.willow-johnson.net/index.php?itemid=49

Well, this is something that would inevitably come up on a revived show, especially in its dubs…we'll see how it goes.  (Quote)

While I'm not screaming, I am disappointed. I shall miss his sexy Sesshoumaru voice. Alot.

Starks, do you know which voice actors are locked in at this point (besides Kelly Sheridan, that is)? I sure hope that Paul Dobson is on board, because his Naraku would be very hard to replace.

Well, it was bound to happen that someone would not return. We were indeed fortunate that the major Japanese voice actors were able to reprise their roles.  (Quote)

damn, its a shame they couldn't keep the cast all the same

at the end i feel the most important voices are Inuyasha, Kagome, and Naraku. You need to have the top leads voices remain the same, as well as the leading villain.

how does this make it less likely Kagome's voice actor will be used? i haven't been keeping tabs on the situation.. is their speculation about Moneca Stori not reprising her role?  (Quote)

Just Kelly.

Moneca hasn't done anything since Inuyasha.  (Quote)

Wow…

I'm not a screaming fan-girl or anything, but wow…
That's really disappointing.

Hopefully for the english dub Viz will find a good replacement for Sesshoumaru. Maybe they'll even hire someone that sounds just like Sesshoumaru, but that's just me thinking.

Man, I just hope Paul Dobson stays for Naraku.  (Quote)

Awww, I really shouldn't pick favorites on the English voice actors; I wish they could all come back to reprise their roles in Inuyasha The Final Act. With the amount of time I have invested in the Inuyasha series, all of the voice actors seem like old friends by now and I would miss any one of them that doesn't return.  (Quote)

Well that's disappointing. Especially since Sesshoumaru showed up so often during the whole season.

I was watching the FMA Brotherhood dub the other day… and I noticed that Al has a new voice actor. It kinda ruined the whole thing. : /  (Quote)

Aaron hit puberty. He couldn't do his Alphonse voice anymore.  (Quote)

Truly is sad. He was a great voice actor, and perfect for Sesshomaru's part. But I'm shocked that Kelly is the only confirmed one. You'd think by now we'd know the whole cast…  (Quote)

I never liked David Kaye as Sesshoumaru's voice actor. I always thought it was too flat, sorta like the US economy. What is surprising is that the other actors aren't confirming. That sorta sucks butt.

No one's mentioned OM yet and the stopping of Shounen Jump. Is the economy that bad that you gotta cut corners on projects like the Final Act and stop websites from scanlating manga in order to save a buck? Gimme a break. The consumer gets to suffer yet again. I suppose this is what we get for paying ppl $13/hr to flip burgers in the 1980s (the going wage was $4/hr) and doling out BILLIONS in VC money to fund TONS of DOT COM BOMBs in the 1990's.

The good times is truly over.  (Quote)

Willow did confirm months ago that she was returning to the role of Kikyou. She didn't announce it publicly, but she knows the webmaster of her fansite, and she confirmed to them that she was returning.

Aww, I'm sad now because David Kaye was one of the handful of VAs I actually liked in dub. So he wanted to be a part of the dub? And I thought Viz studios was in California.
Really, I don't like the dub. I, like everyone with ears, can't stand Moneca as Kagome and Cox just does not hold a candle to Yamaguchi, period. And InuYasha and Kagome have most of the dialogue, so that's a lot of hearing them talk. Also I freaking hate how they mispronounce her name.
So if they replace some of, or even the majority of the cast, you won't see any of my tears. Now, I wonder who will get the roles. I wonder if Viz will hire those Texas folk who usually hang around FUnimation…and cons. Or if they decide they don't want to put that much money into it and get some lesser known people. So it could be worse then the first series's dub, or it could be better.
But now I actually care about the dub. I was never planning on watching it before. But now I'm interested in how this will play out. If they get better actors to fill in, especially if they get someone good to replace Moneca, I see myself DVRing the first episode on Adult Swim.  (Quote)

I was always afraid something like this would happen, since it's been so long since the last dubbed episode aired. But then, since all the orginal Japanese cast returned, I was hopeful the English would too… ah well. At least, so far, it's only David Kaye for definite not returning. That's disappointing, but at least, though it's not set in stone confirmed, the rest of the cast likely are. As long as the main characters' (InuYasha, Kagome, Miroku, Sango, Naraku -even Shippou! XD) voice actors return, I'll happily watch it. But if one of them, like Richard Cox, for instance, pulls out, I don't think I will – it'd be too different! Just not the same. :(   (Quote)

Well I am a freaking screaming fan-girl and I am quite peeved that he isn't going to. Sesshomaru plays a pretty big part on how I feel about this show and that is all thanks to David Kaye's smexy voice. I am Pissed off and utterly disappointed at him. I mean, COME ON it's only ONE last season, is it not? Why not just finish it with a bang? And I mean that with the BIG heart of his BIGGEST fan! ^.^

I am in LOVE with his voice, and PRAY that he changes his mind!  (Quote)

How accurate is Anime News Network? They list Richard Cox, Monica Stori, Kirby Morrow, Kelly Sheridan, and Jillian Michaels as all returning. While I am disappointed that David Kaye will be missing, I am not surprised. I have not heard about any of the others.  (Quote)

Hi Starks,

I saw that you linked back to my website, and I just wanted to confirm to everyone that yes, Willow did confirm to me back in May that she was returning as Kikyou. So the information provided on my blog post is in fact concrete.

The reason I didn't disclose the message itself was because it was included within a private message that wasn't meant to be publicised. I hope you'll understand.

Other than that, I really have no other information to give. So like everyone else, I'm just waiting on a release date. :)

Cheers!
